STOOLS

Fuelled by his fascination with language, philosophy and symbolism, Hein van Lieshout (1981) creates (architectural) things. Searching for essence, rather than shape, he aims to design rhetorical objects.

Is it possible to combine complex architectural elements into a matter of simplicity? In other words, how far can he go to peel off the idea of the object – in this case a bench – and stretch the premises of its construction method and common perception?

This approach leads to a whole new array of possibilities regarding usage.

Although the initial design was intended as a parody of a previous chair design, the object looks like a pulled-apart bench.

It features a combination of two stools, which gives the object a playful face.

The possibility to turn 90 degrees towards your neighbour, contributes to a touch of intimacy.

The separation/connection ensures a feeling of tension and fragility, even though the bench is strong enough to bear two (even more) persons.

The handcrafted construction of laminated plywood creates beautiful lines and every bench has its own personal character.
